Introduced September 2, 2026

AI-Generated Summary

Updated September 3, 2026 at 11:51 AM UTC

The No HUD Funding for Sanctuary Cities Act would bar any U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant money from being used in jurisdictions that are designated as "sanctuary" areas. A sanctuary jurisdiction is defined as a state or local government that limits the sharing of immigration status information or refuses to comply with certain immigration enforcement requests. The restriction would take effect for HUD grants awarded at least 180 days after the law becomes effective, and HUD would work with the Department of Homeland Security to identify which areas qualify.

Key Provisions

  • HUD grant funds cannot be awarded to any jurisdiction classified as a sanctuary jurisdiction.
  • The ineligibility applies only to grants distributed on or after 180 days after the law’s enactment.
  • A sanctuary jurisdiction is defined as any state or local entity that prohibits or restricts sharing immigration status information or compliance with DHS detainer or notification requests.
  • HUD must consult with the Department of Homeland Security to determine which jurisdictions meet the sanctuary definition.
