Stronger Start for Working Families Act

Introduced September 3, 2026

AI-Generated Summary

Updated September 4, 2026 at 9:11 AM UTC

The Stronger Start for Working Families Act rewrites the tax rule that limits who can get a refundable child tax credit. By dropping the earned‑income threshold from $3,000 to $1, it allows almost all working families with any amount of earned income to receive the credit. The change applies to tax returns for years beginning after 2025 and updates the code to remove the old language tied to the $3,000 limit.

Key Provisions

  • Changes the earned‑income amount a family must have to qualify for the refundable portion of the child tax credit, lowering it from $3,000 to $1, meaning virtually any earned income will meet the requirement.
  • Deletes a related paragraph in the tax code that previously dealt with the old $3,000 threshold.
  • The new rule takes effect for tax years that start after December 31, 2025.
