Childcare Cost Relief Act of 2026

Introduced September 16, 2026

AI-Generated Summary

Updated September 22, 2026 at 5:47 AM UTC

The Childcare Cost Relief Act of 2026 amends the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) program to give extra money to states and territories that have especially high child‑care costs when the overall federal block‑grant amount grows. The extra funding is meant to help families and child‑care providers in those high‑cost areas.

Key Provisions

  • When the total amount of CCDBG funds for a fiscal year is higher than the previous year, each "affected" state or territory receives an additional payment equal to 2 % of that increase.
  • A state or territory is considered "affected" if it receives a payment under section 658J and has child‑care costs that are disproportionately high compared to its median income.
  • The Secretary of Health and Human Services must identify affected states/territories each year, starting the first fiscal year after the law takes effect.
  • Within 30 days of each determination, the Secretary must report to Congress the median child‑care cost as a share of median income, an assessment of the child‑care workforce, the list of affected states/territories, and any other needed information.
