Updated September 29, 2026 at 5:22 AM UTC

The bill, called "Garrett's Law," would change federal law to treat certain high‑power air guns as firearms. It adds a new definition of "lethal air gun" to the list of weapons covered by 18 U.S.C. § 921 and requires those weapons to follow the same licensing, record‑keeping, and serialization rules that apply to traditional firearms. The changes would affect manufacturers, sellers, and owners of air guns that meet the specified power and caliber thresholds.

Key Provisions

  • Amends 18 U.S.C. § 921 to insert a new category (D) for "any lethal air gun" and adds a new definition (paragraph 39) that defines a lethal air gun by specific calibers and muzzle velocities, or by an Attorney General designation.
  • Sets the amendment’s effective date to 850 days after the law is enacted.
  • Requires the Attorney General to publish guidance within one year of enactment to help lethal air‑gun manufacturers obtain Federal firearms licenses and comply with serialization and record‑keeping requirements.
