AI-Generated Summary

Updated October 14, 2026 at 4:21 AM UTC

The Improving Access to WIC Act creates a federal grant program that gives money to states that choose to participate. The grants are meant to help states make it easier for eligible women, infants, and children to join and stay in the WIC nutrition program. Funding is authorized at $50 million per year from 2027 through 2031.

Key Provisions

  • States may apply for a grant; each participating state receives at least $200,000 plus additional funds proportional to its share of total WIC participants.
  • Grant money must be used for activities such as outreach, direct referrals from health providers, improving referral systems in schools and Head Start, and expanding online applications.
  • States can develop data‑sharing guidelines so health providers can securely refer clients and share necessary health data (with consent) for WIC certification.
  • The program may identify and contact people who receive Medicaid or SNAP but are not yet in WIC, to encourage enrollment.
  • Collected data may only be used for WIC certification, participation, or the specified outreach activities and must follow confidentiality rules.
  • The USDA Secretary must publish an annual report on program outcomes and best practices, and may use up to 5% of funds for administrative costs.

(2)

Establishing, maintaining, or expanding statewide or multi-statewide data-sharing guidelines to better allow healthcare providers to—

(f)

Report

Not later than 1 year after the date of the enactment of this Act, and annually for each year subsequent to a year in which a grant is carried out under the program, the Secretary shall make publicly available on the website of the Department of Agriculture and submit to Congress a report—
