Recovery of Stolen Checks Act

Introduced February 10, 2025

AI-Generated Summary

Updated November 24, 2025 at 2:51 AM UTC

The Recovery of Stolen Checks Act updates the tax code so that people whose original tax refund check was lost or stolen can opt to receive a replacement refund by direct deposit rather than a new paper check. The Treasury Department must create rules for this option within six months, and the change becomes effective as soon as the law is passed.

Key Provisions

  • Adds a new subsection (o) to IRC §6402 allowing taxpayers who would normally get a paper replacement check for a lost or stolen refund to choose a direct‑deposit payment instead.
  • The Treasury Secretary must issue regulations within six months of the law’s enactment to set up the electronic‑deposit procedures.
  • The amendment takes effect immediately upon the law’s enactment.
