Stop Oil Exports to Lower Gas Prices Act

Introduced May 7, 2026

AI-Generated Summary

Updated May 12, 2026 at 5:52 AM UTC

The bill would temporarily ban the export of U.S. crude oil, gasoline, and diesel while the United States is engaged in military operations against Iran. The ban stays in place until the President declares the operations have ended and the Strait of Hormuz is fully open for global shipping. It is intended to keep more fuel at home during the conflict.

Key Provisions

  • Exports of crude oil, gasoline, and diesel are prohibited from the date the law takes effect until the President both (a) says the military actions against Iran that began in March 2026 have ended, and (b) certifies that the Strait of Hormuz is fully open and shipping has resumed.
  • The President may waive the export ban for crude oil if it cannot be efficiently refined in the United States; a license would be issued for that export, and the oil must be refined abroad and then re‑imported into the United States.
