Mr. Speaker, we gather today to honor the illustrious career of Mary Jordan-Church, who will retire after an extraordinary 41 years of unwavering service at the Veterans' Administration.

Mary's remarkable journey began on October 13, 1981, when she stepped into the role of Office Manager and Secretary at the Vet Center. Over the years, her commitment and dedication propelled her through a series of roles that reflected her unyielding dedication to our nation's veterans.

After a decade of efficiently triaging clients at the Office Manager position, Mary was elevated to the position of Counseling Assistant for her dedication and aptitude. In this expanded role, Mary's responsibilities included oversight over the organization's Community Outreach, where she represented the Vet Center at vital mental health meetings and became a steadfast voice for the veteran community.

Driven by a undying commitment to better serve veterans and manage crises effectively, Mary then embarked on a journey of education. Her pursuit for knowledge led her to Fresno City College, where she earned an associate degree in Alcohol Counseling, equipping her with critical skills to support those battling addiction. Inspired to make a lasting impact Mary continued her studies at California State University, Fresno where she earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree of Social Work in 2003.

During these years of academic pursuit, Mary navigated the delicate balance of raising her children with the support of her family. Her determination and dedication were further exemplified through intensive internships at esteemed organizations such as the Salvation Army, Avanti (a group home for boys), and the Mobile Crisis for Fresno County. Notably, her final internship took place at VACCHCS Mental Health, working alongside Drs. Nile and Howsepian.

These profound studies and experiences paved the path to Mary's appointment as a Readjustment Counselor in 2002. Soon after, Mary's continuous pursuit of excellence and knowledge culminated as she achieved the rank of Social Worker, coinciding with the completion of her studies in 2003.

Mary's dedication extended far beyond the confines of her professional responsibilities. She exemplified her commitment by participating in an impressive 35 Veterans' Day parades as a representative of the Vet Center. One such memorable parade took place in Sacramento, where she stood proudly, pushing a stroller carrying her youngest son, while waving the United States flag alongside her mother. Their presence was a testament to their unwavering support for veterans and their resolute belief in the values the flag represents.

As Mary embarks on a well-deserved retirement, her legacy of dedication, compassion, and unwavering support for veterans and their respective stories stands as a beacon of inspiration. Her journey, marked by perseverance and continuous growth, has left an indelible mark on the lives she has touched. From these modest beginnings, he rose to prominence as a Harvard Law professor, leaving an indelible mark on the world of law and education. His steadfast commitment to civil rights and racial justice shaped his life's work, inspiring those around him to strive for equality and a more just society.

Known affectionately as ``Tree'' by his friends, Charles's impact extended far beyond academia. He stood at the forefront of pivotal moments in history, representing survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre and serving as Anita Hill's attorney during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. His authored works on human rights, race, and class left a lasting imprint on legal discourse and society at large.

Charles's connection to his hometown of Merced remained strong throughout his illustrious career. Even as he earned accolades at Harvard and beyond, he carried with him the values instilled during his upbringing in Merced. His commitment to his community was reciprocated when the local Superior Court building was named in his honor, a testament to his extraordinary achievements.

Charles's journey to become a legal luminary was shaped by his early fascination with the TV show ``Perry Mason.'' Inspired by Mason's character, Ogletree embarked on a path that would see him become a trailblazer in his own right. His commitment to education and academic excellence propelled him from Merced High School to Stanford University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in political science before receiving his law degree from Harvard Law School.

In his homecoming to Merced, Charles reflected on the profound influence his hometown had on his life's trajectory. He attributed his success to the friendships and mentors he found in Merced, acknowledging their role in helping him overcome challenges and reach new heights. Charles's journey came full circle when he welcomed the inaugural class of students to the University of California campus in Merced, emphasizing the importance of positive connections in achieving success. As we bid farewell to Charles, we honor his legacy of compassion, dedication, and service to humanity. Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Barnes. Their enduring partnership was built on a foundation of shared values and intellectual curiosity. His children, Charles Ogletree, III and Rashida Ogletree, stand as a testament to his legacy of excellence and dedication. Additionally, his cherished grandchildren, Marquelle, Nia Mae, and Jamila Ogletree, as well as Makayla George, reflect the warmth and love that he bestowed upon his family.

Born on May 31, 1953, in San Fernando, California, Dr. Francine's life unfolded as a tapestry interwoven with threads of faith, education, and community service. She was the youngest among eleven siblings, born to Pastor/Dr. Hillery Talbert and Mother Rosa Lee (Cox- Thompson) Broadous. Her spiritual roots were firmly planted at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, founded by her own father, where her passion for performance first took root. Francine's thirst for knowledge knew no bounds. Her academic journey led her through several distinguished institutions, including Long Beach State, Stanislaus State, UC Davis, and Fresno State. Her unwavering pursuit of excellence culminated in a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. Throughout her academic odyssey, she not only enriched her own mind but also ignited the flames of aspiration in countless young hearts within her community.

In the autumn of 1976, fate brought Francine and Henry Ifeanyi-Chukwu Oputa together at Stanislaus State in Turlock, California. Their love story blossomed, and on August 20, 1977, they embarked on a 46-year- long adventure as husband and wife. Their journey led them to Fresno, where they would establish their family and leave a lasting mark on the community. Faith played a pivotal role in their lives, inspiring the founding of The Way Ministries John . . . 14:6 in November 1989. Their dedication to the community materialized in the establishment of the Saturday Cultural School and the creation of a lasting tribute, the ``When I think of Home'' mural, which stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to West Fresno.

Francine's career spanned 30 impactful years at Fresno State, where she held the esteemed position of Director of the Cross Cultural and Gender Center (CCGC). Her dedication to diversity, cultural competency, and support for students, faculty, and staff was evident through her tireless efforts and the programs she championed, including the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute and the Women's Resource Center. Upon retiring from the university in 2020, Francine founded Oputa & Associates, a successful consulting firm that drew from her decades of experience in performing, inspirational speaking, and diversity, equity, and inclusion training. As CEO, she continued her mission of making a positive impact on a nationwide scale.

Dr. Francine L. Broadous Oputa's life exemplified the values of faith, education, and community service. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations, a testament to the transformative power of a life well-lived. Her contributions to her community, her unwavering commitment to education, and her boundless faith will forever be etched in our hearts.

Francine was preceded in death by her parents, Pastor/Dr. Hillery Talbert and Mother Rosa Lee (Cox-Thompson) Broadous, as well as six siblings. She is survived by her husband, Rev./Dr. Henry Ifeanyi-Chukwu Oputa, her three children--Chunyendu ``CeCe'' N. Oputa, I Adeficha Oputa, and Nwachukwu N. Oputa, and several siblings. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family, her community, and all those whose lives she touched.

This monumental event offers a unique opportunity to reflect upon a century of innovation, dedication, and visionary research that has shaped the grape industry in the United States.

The story of the USDA Grapevine Breeding Research Program commenced in 1923 within the fertile soils of Fresno, California. Founded

at the USDA Experiment Vineyard, it became an integral part of the USDA Bureau of Plant Industry. Its mission was clear--to redefine the grape industry through groundbreaking research.

In 1972, the program found a new home within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the USDA's premier in-house research agency. Throughout its remarkable journey, the program remained unwavering in its commitment to developing high-quality, disease-resistant cultivars of Vitis, spanning table grapes and raisins.

The San Joaquin Valley Agricultural Sciences Center (SJVASC) has been the hub of innovation for this program. Its dedicated researchers have consistently led the charge in scientific advancements within the field of grape breeding. Their efforts have not only met the demands of U.S. agriculture but have also supplied top-tier, nutritious fruits to both national and international markets.

As we convene to mark this momentous centenary, we acknowledge the program's profound influence. For one hundred years, it has been a pillar of grape production and innovation, perfectly situated in the heart of American grape cultivation, the Central Valley of California.

The 100th anniversary ceremony is not merely retrospective; it is a glimpse into the future. Their collective wisdom and vision will chart the course of grapevine breeding in the years to come. This anniversary of the USDA Grapevine Breeding Research Program is a momentous occasion that deserves our highest regard. It celebrates a century of scientific excellence, unwavering dedication, and the pursuit of a resilient and prosperous grape industry.

Mr. Speaker, today, we gather to commemorate a remarkable milestone in the field of healthcare and community service--the 50th Anniversary of the Central Valley Black Nurses Association (CVBNA). This historic occasion is a testament to the enduring legacy and unwavering commitment of the CVBNA to improving healthcare access and equity.

Founded in 1973 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Carol Drake, former Dean and Professor of Nursing at Fresno City College. along with other trailblazing founders, Brenda Starks, Odester Tate, Gladys Hollie, Ruth Ann Terry, and Loretta Leach-Scruggs, the CVBNA has consistently exemplified excellence in nursing and community advocacy. In 2016, the CVBNA achieved a significant milestone by becoming an official chapter of the National Black Nursing Association, Inc. (NBNA). Subsequently, on March 24, 2017, the CVBNA was incorporated in the state of California as a non-profit organization, solidifying its commitment to the advancement of healthcare and service to the community.

The CVBNA's mission is both clear and commendable: to investigate, define, and address the healthcare needs of Black Americans and other minorities, striving to ensure healthcare commensurate with that of the larger society. With their profound understanding, knowledge, interest, concern, and experience, Black nurses in the CVBNA have consistently made a significant impact on the healthcare status of the Black community. One of the hallmarks of the CVBNA is its unwavering commitment to community service. Through voluntary hours, members provide an array of preventative health screenings and health education, encompassing many critical areas. These services are delivered in collaboration with a multitude of community-based partners, including faith-based organizations, civic groups, fraternal organizations, hospitals, and schools of nursing.

The CVBNA's community outreach efforts have left an indelible mark on the Central Valley. During the pandemic, they were on the front lines, providing COVID-19 vaccinations and contributing countless hours to vaccinate thousands of individuals on the westside of Fresno. Their commitment to health education is unwavering, with numerous pop-up events for high blood pressure screening and comprehensive health education in underserved communities. They've also extended their care to homeless students, providing hygiene kits, and expanded their presence to underserved schools. Moreover, they've been mentors and educators, supporting student nurses and tutoring those facing academic challenges.

The vision of the CVBNA extends beyond the present day. Their advocacy efforts are rooted in the promotion of culturally competent, accessible, and affordable healthcare. They ardently champion the professional and educational advancement of ethnic nurses and remain steadfast in educating consumers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers about the unique health challenges faced by ethnic minority populations. Their dedication to developing ethnic minority nurse leaders in areas of health policy, practice, education, and research is unwavering. As we stand on the cusp of the CVBNA's 50th Anniversary, we must recognize and celebrate this momentous occasion. It represents five decades of unwavering dedication, advocacy, and service to the community.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the life of Gregory ``Don'' Hunsucker, a beloved husband, brother, father, and leader.

Born on August 29, 1947, Gregory was one of two sons born to Gragrie and Jolene (Frazier) Hunsucker. Growing up, Don learned lessons such as to always fight for what is right, to help those who can't help themselves, and to never, ever give up which served him well when doctors told him he would never walk again due to an accident he sustained while riding a horse at Church camp. True to his virtues, Don not only walked again but went on to pursue his athletic aspirations at Parlier High school and even college after.

Parlier High is also where Don met the love of his life, Linda Mae, who he described as the prettiest girl he ever saw. Lucky for him, her devotion matched his infatuation and the two shared a bond for the next 55 years, dedicating their lives to their greatest gifts, Jerry and Michelle. As a husband and father, Mr. Hunsucker cherished every moment with his family. Whether it was dressing up as Santa on Christmas or teaching them how to throw a football, he always made sure to not just tell them he loved them but showed them as well.

In 1971, Don decided to join the fight of the labor movement and began serving as a Special Representative and Organizer for the Retail Clerks International Association. Eventually, he became the Union Representative for the Retail Clerks Local 1288, and following the merger of several unions he was elected as the President--Chief Executive Officer of the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 1288. As the youngest person to ever be elected President of a local union, Mr. Hunsucker was fearless in his struggle to advocate for his members but always managed to conduct himself with respect when interacting with others. Whether it was at the negotiating table or heading a picket line, Don always put his members first which grew ten- fold by the time he retired in 2007.

Throughout his distinguished career, he also held many titles in other organizations such as Vice President of the California Federation of Labor, Chair of the Northern California Caucus, Trustee of the Northern California Joint Pension Fund, President of the Fresno-Madera- Tulare-Kings Counties Central Labor Council, and Vice President of the Fresno Area Coalition of Organized Labor. Even after his retirement, Mr. Hunsucker continued to help and honor workers of the Central Valley by becoming President of the UFCW Local 1288 Retiree's Club where he was instrumental in founding Union Park, and Workers Memorial Foundation, Inc. For all of these efforts and more, Don was named Labor Leader of the Year three times in his lifetime.

In addition to his commitment to labor, Don was extremely involved within his community as well. For example, he helped raise money for the Cancer Society, Leukemia Society, Muscular Dystrophy and the Fresno State Boosters Club. He also served as a board member for several organizations including United Way, the Easter Seal Society, and the City of Fresno's Bid Compliance Committee. Don truly did it all and was more than deserving of all the recognition he received, including the Key to the City of Fresno as well as the City of Parlier.

Despite his countless achievements, Don always remained true to the virtues he learned as a child and committed his life to fighting for what he felt was right. He was a leader of the community and his willingness to stand up for others was admired by many. Although his love and thoughtfulness will be missed greatly by those fortunate to know him, his legacy will live on through the love of his life, Linda Mae, and their greatest gifts, Michelle and Jerry.

Mr. Speaker, I ask my colleagues to join me in honoring Gregory ``Don'' Hunsucker for his contributions to labor and the community. May we continue to be inspired by his story.

Mr. Speaker, today, we gather to pay tribute to a legendary figure in the world of motorsports, Bill Vukovich, Jr., who recently passed away at the age of 79. Bill Vukovich, Jr., a native of Fresno, California, was not only a highly accomplished racer but also an integral part of a racing dynasty that left an indelible mark on the sport.

Bill Vukovich, Jr. began his racing career in 1965 and continued until 1983 competing in the IndyCar Series and USAC Championship. His talent and determination on the track earned him recognition, including the title of the 1968 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year. Over the years, he participated in the Indy 500, achieving six top-10 finishes, including a memorable second-place finish in 1973.

However, what set the Vukovich family apart was not just individual success but their unique status as a three-generation racing family: Bill Vukovich, Jr., his father Bill Vukovich, Sr., and his son Bill Vukovich, III became the first, three-generation family, to compete in the prestigious Indianapolis 500. Their ascent from being local racing heroes in the heart of the Central Valley to the grandeur of the Indy stage deeply resonated with the local community, providing them with cherished figures to fervently rally behind. Tragically, alongside their triumphs, the Vukovich family also endured profound losses. Bill Vukovich, Sr., a two-time Indianapolis 500 champion, tragically lost his life in a racing accident in 1955. Bill Vukovich, Jr. was just 11 years old at the time, forever marked by the radio broadcast that informed him of his father's fatal crash. Then, in 1990, another devastating blow struck the family when Bill Vukovich, III lost control of his car during practice at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, resulting in a fatal crash. Bill Vukovich, Jr. was 46 when he tragically lost his only son, known affectionately as ``Billy.''

Reflecting on these unimaginable losses, Bill Vukovich, Jr. once said, ``It happened to me twice--the impossible happened twice.'' The biography of the Vukovich family published in 2012, authored by Bones Bourcier, revealed the profound impact of these tragedies, especially the loss of Billy Vukovich, III, on Bill Vukovich, Jr., describing it as a ``total loss of control.''

In 1981, Bill Vukovich, Jr. was rightfully inducted into the Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame, joining his father, who was part of the 1959 induction class, and his son, who was honored in 2007. Throughout his racing career, Bill Vukovich, Jr. participated in 158 races, achieving Top 10 finishes an impressive 85 times. His journey included thrilling Saturday nights at Kearney Bowl, a now-defunct dirt oval track in southwest Fresno. In 2019, the City of Fresno paid tribute to the Vukovich racing legacy by placing a memorial in front of Selland Arena in downtown Fresno. Today, as we remember Bill Vukovich, Jr., we can find solace in the thought that he has found peace and has reunited with his beloved son.

Mr. Speaker, it is with a heavy heart that I rise to pay tribute to a remarkable individual whose legacy will forever resonate in the annals of California agriculture and community service. Donald Albert Schroeder, known affectionately as Don, departed this life on October 24, 2023, at the age of 96 in Orange Cove, California. Born on November 29, 1926, in Santa Ana, California, to Albert and Louise Schroeder, Don's journey was one of enduring commitment and profound contributions.

Don's academic journey began at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned his bachelor's degree with honors in Agriculture in 1949. He furthered his education at the University of California, Davis, obtaining a master's degree. Stepping into the agricultural realm, Don, alongside his father A.F. Schroeder, cultivated the fertile lands of Orange County before making a significant move to the Central Valley in 1958. For six fruitful decades, Don played a pivotal role in shaping the agricultural landscape of the San Joaquin Valley, establishing ranches, and contributing significantly to the citrus industry in California.

In 1983, after the loss of his first wife, Marian Olsen Picher, Don remarried Sharon Burkdoll Carey. Together, they embarked on a new chapter, developing a ranch in Orange Cove dedicated to citrus and olives. Don's leadership extended beyond the groves; he was a foundational member of the California Farm Bureau Federation, serving as Chairman of the Board from 1955 to 1956. His impact on the citrus industry was immeasurable, co-founding California Citrus Mutual in 1977 and serving as Chairman from 1981 to 1984.

Don's commitment to community service was equally profound. A devoted member of the Orange Cove Lions Club and the American Legion, he gave generously to the betterment of his community. His benevolence reached beyond borders, as he and Sharon provided assistance to the Hopi Tribe in Second Mesa, Arizona, imparting knowledge on irrigation systems and modern farming techniques.

Beyond the orchards and boardrooms, Don found solace in the great outdoors. A passionate hiker and skier, he, along with close friends, traversed the California Sierras for over 50 years. Even into his 70s, Don embraced the thrill of operating snowcats at China Peak, showcasing a zest for life that inspired all who knew him.

In the tapestry of his life, Don leaves a legacy of agricultural innovation, community service, and a love for the land. His impact will endure in the hearts of family, friends, and the agricultural community he so deeply loved. He is survived by three children, Julia Picher, Robert Carey, and Renee Aitelli (Peter); his grandchildren, Marcel Mendes (Erin), Alex Aitelli (Haley), and Audrey Aitelli; three great- granddaughters; and his niece and nephew, Joanne Riedel and Ed Riedel (Melanie).

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fresno County as they celebrate 75 years of dedicated service to the youth and families of our community. Founded in early 1949, the Boys' Club in downtown Fresno, provided a safe haven for young boys. Over the decades, thanks to the generosity of donors and community members, more clubs have opened, expanding their reach.

Through challenges and opportunities, the committed board of directors and caring staff have worked tirelessly to create environments that embody their core values: Respect, Integrity, Passion, Fun, and Commitment. Today, over 4,000 children and teens call the club their second home, with programs extending beyond Fresno to communities like Orange Cove, Huron, Firebaugh, and Reedley.

Boys & Girls Clubs give kids opportunities to succeed through impactful programs. Serving 191,000 healthy meals annually, they ensure members receive the nutrition they need to thrive. Remarkably, 92% of Club members expect to graduate from high school, demonstrating the positive academic environment fostered by the Club. Additionally, 96% of members report that staff provide clear expectations and opportunities to better themselves, highlighting the supportive atmosphere that encourages personal growth. Formula for Impact ensures every child is welcomed and supported in areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship.

Programs like Power Hour provide essential homework help, while Project Learn enhances educational performance through enrichment activities. The My Future initiative builds digital skills and fosters safe online interactions. Financial literacy is promoted through Money Matters, teaching young members about saving and investing.

In health, Triple Play promotes nutrition and physical activity, and programs like SMART Moves and SMART Girls address vital prevention education. For character development, initiatives such as Youth of the Year and Keystone cultivate future leaders.

As we celebrate this milestone, let us recognize the transformative impact the Boys & Girls Clubs have had on the lives of over 1 million young people. Their focus on academic success, healthy lifestyles, and character development is vital for shaping future leaders.

Mr. Speaker, we gather to commemorate a remarkable milestone in the field of education--the 80th Anniversary of Fresno Pacific University. This historic occasion is a testament to the enduring legacy and unwavering commitment of Fresno Pacific University to improving education in the community.

Fresno Pacific University encompasses a grand and diverse student body which entails many of the students being the first in their families to attend college. This has been possible partly due to the impressive campus locations from North and Southeast Fresno to Visalia, Bakersfield and Merced. These expansive locations have opened up many opportunities to those who believed that higher education was out of their reach. By implementing the proud Hispanic Serving Institution, Hispanic first-generation students graduate at the same rate as students overall.

The implementation of this luminary program has provided countless educational opportunities for Hispanic Americans and underrepresented populations. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the life of Sally M. Caglia, whose commitment to maintaining her family's commercial legacy and philanthropic contributions has left an indelible mark in her community.

Born on April 20, 1947, Sally inherited the Italian work ethic, ingenuity, and family devotion from her Caglia lineage. These values aligned well with her upbringing as Sally seized her opportunities and became the women, we all knew and loved, one who devoted her life to her family, her work, and traveling.

The family business was Sally's pride and joy. Starting at a young age as a cashier at Orange Avenue Disposal and working as the Executive Assistant at the Electric Motor Shop, Sally worked tirelessly to ensure the viability and success of the Caglia family's commercial legacy.

Sally will be fondly remembered by all who knew her for her adventurous spirit; a passion for travel, fishing, and the arts; her devoted civic engagement; and for her love of leopard print and turquoise jewelry.

Sally was an avid traveler and some of her most memorable trips were to Australia, India, and Tanzania. She went with The Rotary Club to Israel and to Palestine with the Catholic Church. She visited Antarctica with the National Geographic ship. She traveled all over the world to be with her globetrotting children and grandchildren.

Quick to laugh and always smiling, Sally never met a stranger. She hosted numerous foreign exchange students and wayward travelers. She was an avid supporter of higher educational pursuits of many local and international students.

The dedication to her family business reached its pinnacle when she was awarded the Leon S. Peters Award issued to business leaders who embody the spirit of service, community engagement, and the philanthropy of its namesake. Sally was tremendously honored to have been the third member of her family to receive the award and often said that she just couldn't believe it. There was no greater joy for her than being recognized for following in the footsteps of her beloved brother, Dick Caglia, and her father, Frank Caglia.

Sally's legacy is one shared with family, but her qualities as an individual were uniquely her own. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she was involved in countless local and international organizations, charities, boards, and fund-raisers including the Cultural Arts Rotary Club, Cultural Arts District Association, Fresno/ Clovis Convention and Visitors Bureau Research and Development Board, the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, the City of Fresno Historic Preservation Commission, the Warnor's Center for the Performing Arts, Storyland and Jazz, the Shenzen Stroll, St. John's Cathedral annual carnival, the Italian museum at Fresno State, and the St. Elia Festival, to name only a few.

In her community, Sally will be remembered not only as a successful businesswoman and friend but also as a compassionate and caring individual. She touched the lives of many with her kindness, warmth, and willingness to lend a helping hand.

Sally has finally reunited with her parents Frank and Florence Caglia and her brother Joseph Caglia. Still, she is survived by her loving family including her four children, Noelle Iles, John Hester, Rebecca Darche Hester, and Andrea Olsen; her five grandchildren, India Iles, Ella Iles, Jack Hester, Jean Baptiste Hester-Dorbe and Sophia Hester- Dorbe; her siblings Dick Caglia, Vince Caglia, Mary Ann Caglia, Bernadette Boyle, and Rose Caglia, and countless cousins, and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Speaker, I ask my colleagues to join me in recognizing the lifelong contributions of Sally M. Caglia to her family, and the Fresno community. May her story serve as an inspiration to us all.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the indomitable spirit and extraordinary life of Wes Selvidge; a true icon whose legacy transcends the ordinary. Born on August 8, 1942, Wes was not just a man; he was a force of nature, embodying the essence of California's oldest ranching traditions.

Raised amidst the vast expanse of the Tracy Ranch in Buttonwillow, Wes lived and breathed the farming life, etching his name alongside pioneers. In 1971, he co-founded the Buttonwillow Land and Cattle Company, a testament to his enduring commitment to the land that shaped him. Wes's agricultural prowess, keen intellect, and unyielding desire to learn elevated him to the ranks of respected growers, contributing significantly to the diverse crops he cultivated.

Wes's influence extended far beyond the fields. Engaging in a rich tapestry of activities, he raced motorcycles and cars, soared the skies on hang gliders, worked cattle with ranching comrades, and piloted planes and helicopters with a natural finesse. A licensed pilot since his teenage years, Wes not only competed nationally in aerobatic competitions but also treated countless individuals to their maiden flights.

His love for speed wasn't confined to the air; it translated to the ground with a passion for cars. From a Model A hot rod built at age 14 to a collection of meticulously restored vehicles, Wes's mechanical acumen was impressive. Beyond these adventures, Wes was a craftsman and a restorer. His dedication to restoring sunken boats from the depths of Lake Tahoe showcased not just his skills but his determination to turn forgotten treasures into award-winning beauties.

Wes faced over 18 years of health challenges with a resilience that mirrored his zest for life. Throughout this journey, his steadfast partner of 59 years, Janet, stood by his side, a testament to a love that weathered the storms.

In Wes's passing, we celebrate a life that embraced adventure, challenged norms, and left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in his family: his wife Janet, daughter Andrea, son Jason, and, undoubtedly his proudest achievement, his four grandsons--John, Clay, Owen, and Zachary. May we draw inspiration from Wes Selvidge's enduring spirit and the richness of a life well-lived. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who mourn the loss of this remarkable Californian.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the life of Chris Sorensen, who passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024. Mr. Sorensen was an artist in Fresno who founded the city's beloved ArtHop, bringing artists and the community together to share and enjoy the talent and creativity that Fresno's residents have to offer.

Mr. Sorensen was born on June 30, 1925, in Fresno, CA. He grew up in Mendota, CA before moving to Fresno where he graduated from Fresno High School in 1944. After graduating, he served our country and joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. When he came back home, he worked at his family's machine works business in Mendota until he moved back to Fresno and started WECO, a welding supply business.

Art was not Mr. Sorensen's initial career. Prior to his legacy as an artist, he had been a draftsman, inventor, a partner in farm equipment and manufacturing, and a welder. His interest and career in art started because of his son, John, who took an art class at McLane High School and asked him for help with welding. After that, Mr. Sorensen took art classes as well--kickstarting his legendary career as one of Fresno's most revered artists.

Sorensen's impact extended beyond his beautiful sculptures when he began the Chris Sorensen Studio in the early 1990s. This studio brought artists in Fresno together to work on their art, providing the original home for Fresno's ArtHop. Now, ArtHop is spread out through multiple locations in the city and is held on the first and third Thursday of every month, providing a space for the community to come together to appreciate and enjoy the work of our local artists. Sorensen's gallery and art studio has been proclaimed the ``The Heart of Art in Fresno,'' bringing together artists for more than 30 years.

His specialty in welding landed him the nickname of ``Man of Steel,'' as he became known for his large metal sculptures. His impressive sculptures and artistic prowess can be witnessed throughout the Valley, including a massive heart at St. Agnes Hospital, a metal tree on Friant Road, a life size mammoth in Madera, and a bulldog at his welding company, WECO.

Mr. Sorensen has also demonstrated his generosity and dedication to the arts extensively in his time. He has organized a fundraiser for the Mariposa Arts Council when they lost their headquarters in a fire, put on an annual Pink Show to raise money for breast cancer research, supported the Timberline Gallery in Oakhurst in keeping their gallery open, among many other instances of philanthropy.

Chris was a loving husband to Mitzi Christensen and loving father to their two children, Vicki and John. He was also a grandfather and great-grandfather to 7 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Speaker, I ask my colleagues to join me in honoring Chris Sorensen for his dedication and achievements in advocating for local artists and bringing the community together. May we never forget his contributions and continue to be inspired by his legacy.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the extraordinary spirit and life of James Davidson Hallowell; a great son, husband, father, businessman, philanthropist, and community leader.

On July 25, 1933, James was born to Dennis and Doretta (Johnson) Hallowell in Brawley, California. Just one year after his birth, James and his family relocated to Clovis. He graduated from Clovis High School and later pursued higher education at Fresno State. He graduated from Fresno State with a degree in marketing in 1955. James devoted much of his youth to helping at his family's dealership, and after graduation he chose to work full-time at, Hallowell Chevrolet. He later married his high school sweetheart Coralein ``Coke'' Smith on Valentine's Day in 1957 and began leading the family business in 1965. He was a talented businessman and by the end of his tenure the dealership had generated over $65 million in sales.

James's work as a philanthropist and community leader was rightfully recognized as he attained many well-deserved accolades throughout his life. From 1969 to 2000, Mr. Hallowell received the Sid Craig School of Business Alumni and Friends Award, the Fresno Junior Chamber of Commerce Award as Fresno's Outstanding Young Man, Time Magazine's Quality Dealer Award, the Leon S. Peters award, the AFP Outstanding Philanthropist Award, and along with Coke he won the Excellence in Business Hall of Fame Award. Finally, he was honored with Honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters from Fresno State.

His love for life was reflected in his passion for cycling and biking across Europe along with his community activities. James was a charter member of the Fresno Business Council reflecting his commitment as a businessman who wanted to serve by tackling issues in the community. In 1995 James and Coke made a five-year pledge of $100,000 to Fresno State. He was on the board of the Fresno Philharmonic and the Fresno Art Museum. Mr. Hallowell had a seat on Community Medical Center's Board of Directors. James cared deeply about the community which is perfectly illustrated by his and Coke's donation of a conservation easement on their 700-acre cattle ranch for the San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust.

In James's passing, we celebrate a life that left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on through his family; wife Coke, daughters Joell and Elise, and grandchildren, Taylor, and Alden Moir. May we draw inspiration from James's enduring spirit and the richness of a life well-lived.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the distinguished life and incomparable spirit of Donn Furman; a passionate environmental advocate Whose legacy lives on in the natural world around us and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Born in 1950 in Dinuba, California to Duane and Patricia Furman, Donn went on to become a force and advocate of nature. Raised amidst the stunning backdrop of the Fresno/Madera area, Donn's love of learning led him to earn his bachelor's degree in philosophy and minor in economics at California State University, Fresno before doing graduate work in philosophy at the University of Washington, Seattle. His knowledge and deep love of nature laid the foundation for his remarkable life dedicated to preserving the diverse landscape of California.

Donn's passion for the preservation of nature was fostered by his love of rivers, fly fishing with his buddies around the world, hiking, all things water, and simply being outdoors. Donn embodied the essence of California's landscape as he dedicated himself to environmental advocacy. In 1985, he became the Executive Director of the Committee to Save the Kings River which worked to protect the river from a proposal to build a dam. The community of supporters including fly fishermen, campers, and legislators united in support. Two years after Donn's appointment, federal wild and scenic designation and protection for 92 miles of the river was established.

After his success in protecting the Kings River, Donn went on to spearhead the San Joaquin River Committee where he promoted recreational and educational use of the river, lobbied governmental agencies and legislators, and expanded membership. His work coalesced into the formation of the San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust, a nonprofit public benefit corporation and treasured piece of the Central Valley that has spread joy and appreciation of the land to all who have had the pleasure to visit. As Executive Director, he established a Board of Directors and coordinated the development of a conceptual plan, educational programs, fundraising, and membership.

Wherever Donn went, his love of learning and advocacy followed. He earned his JD from San Joaquin College of Law where he then specialized in environmental, water, and land use law. As a Deputy City Attorney in San Francisco, he represented the SF Public

Utilities Commission where he addressed the Endangered Species Act, Hetch Hetchy water and power, Bay-Delta issues, and Tuolumne and San Joaquin River water supply issues. Donn later took part in founding the Sierra Foothill Conservancy which acquires, protects, and preserves historical rangeland for educational and recreational use.

Donn's love of life was not confined to his commendable service. He was an avid reader, writer, poet, musician, gardener, loyal friend, naturalist, and traveler. Wherever there were trails to explore, Donn hiked them with his family and friends.

In Donn's passing, we celebrate a life that embraced adventure, challenged the status quo, and left an indelible mark on the world and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in his family: his wife of 38 years, Cynthia, son Nicholas, brother Douglas, sister Debora, and nieces Kate and Nicole and mother Patricia. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who mourn the loss of this remarkable Californian. May we draw inspiration from Donn Furman's enduring spirit and the richness of a life well-lived.
