GI Bill Transfer Extension Act

Introduced September 20, 2018

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 11:45 PM UTC

The GI Bill Transfer Extension Act changes the rules for the Post‑9/11 Educational Assistance Program so that service members and recent veterans can transfer their education benefits to family members for a longer period. It updates who can transfer, removes a specific deadline for making the transfer, and stops regulations from limiting eligibility based on a maximum number of service years. The changes apply to anyone who left the uniformed services on or after August 1, 2009.

Key Provisions

  • Expands eligibility to include service members who have completed at least six years of service and agree to serve four more years, or as defined by future regulations.
  • Allows veterans who met the same service requirements and have been discharged within the past 15 years to transfer benefits.
  • Eliminates the existing time limit for making a transfer request by deleting the previous deadline paragraph.
  • Prohibits any regulation from setting a maximum number of service years as a condition for eligibility.
  • Applies these changes to individuals discharged or released from service on or after August 1, 2009.
