Homeland Security for Children Act

Introduced September 19, 2017

AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 15, 2026 at 6:09 PM UTC

The Homeland Security for Children Act would change the Homeland Security Act of 2002 so that the Department of Homeland Security must consider the specific needs of children when planning for terrorism, human‑trafficking, drug‑trafficking, and disaster response. It adds language requiring input from groups that represent children and directs the department to integrate that input into its policies and operations.

Key Provisions

  • Amends the existing stakeholder‑feedback requirement (section 709(c)(6)) to explicitly include feedback from organizations that represent children’s needs.
  • Adds a new subsection to the department’s planning authority (section 504) that obligates the Administrator to identify and integrate children’s needs into preparation, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation activities for natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other man‑made incidents.
  • Allows the Administrator to appoint a technical expert, who can consult with outside child‑focused organizations, to help coordinate the integration of children’s needs into homeland‑security planning.
