Introduced March 30, 2017

Updated April 15, 2026 at 2:24 PM UTC

The Veterans' Compensation Cost‑of‑Living Adjustment Act of 2017 raises the monthly payments for veterans with service‑connected disabilities and for surviving spouses and children of certain disabled veterans. The increase takes effect on December 1, 2017 and is tied to the same percentage rise applied to Social Security benefits. It affects veterans, their dependents, and surviving family members who receive disability, dependency, or indemnity compensation.

Key Provisions

  • Effective Dec 1 2017, the VA Secretary must raise disability compensation, dependent allowances, clothing allowance, and survivor benefits by the same percentage as the Social Security cost‑of‑living adjustment.
  • The specific amounts increased include wartime disability compensation, additional compensation for dependents, clothing allowance, and dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses and children.
  • The percentage increase is determined by the Social Security Act’s COLA calculation for that year.
  • The Secretary may also administratively adjust rates for certain other disabled individuals not covered under the main compensation statutes.
  • Adjusted rates must be published in the Federal Register by the deadline set for Social Security COLA publications.
