AI-Generated Summary

Updated April 14, 2026 at 1:00 AM UTC

The Officer Sean Collier Campus Police Recognition Act of 2019 amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to extend federal death benefits to campus police officers. It creates a specific definition of “campus police officer” as a police officer employed by a higher‑education institution who can enforce criminal laws and make arrests. The change applies to line‑of‑duty deaths occurring on or after April 15, 2013, and therefore benefits the families of those officers.

Key Provisions

  • Adds a definition of “campus police officer” to the law, covering officers employed by colleges or universities who have arrest authority.
  • Rearranges existing paragraph numbering and inserts the new definition as paragraph (1).
  • Expands the list of personnel eligible for death benefits to include campus police officers by adding them to the relevant subsection.
  • Sets the effective date so the benefits apply to incidents occurring on or after April 15, 2013.
