Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the distinguished career and leadership of David P. Engel, Chairman of the Port of Corpus Christi and respected business executive, community leader, and dedicated public servant.
A proud graduate of Southern Methodist University, where he earned his bachelor's in
business administration, Mr. Engel further honed his expertise through the Owner President Management Program at Harvard University. For over 50 years, he has applied his knowledge and vision to every aspect of business management, including operations, acquisitions, divestitures, and financial performance improvement.
Before founding Engel and Associates, LLC, a management consulting firm, Mr. Engel served as President of Airgas Southwest, Inc., overseeing operations across Texas, New Mexico, and Northern Mexico. Under his leadership, the company thrived as a subsidiary of Airgas, Inc., the largest distributor of welding supplies and packaged gases in the United States.
Mr. Engel's influence extends well beyond the private sector. He currently serves on the board of Susser Bank and the advisory board of Heldenfel's. He has also served as Chairman of the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Commission, the CHRISTUS Spohn Health, and the Lexington Museum, leaving a lasting impact on economic development, healthcare and cultural preservation in his community.
During Mr. Engel's chairmanship at the Port of Corpus Christi, the Port of Corpus Christi experienced record-breaking tonnage in 2024 and the first half of 2025. Under his leadership, the Port of Corpus Christi achieved transformative milestones including the successful completion of the new Port of Corpus Christi Executive Administration Building, the opening of the Port of Corpus Christi Center for Wildlife Rescue at the Texas State Aquarium, and the completion of the new Harbor Bridge. Mr. Engel worked closely with the Port Authority's commissioners, executive leadership, staff, industry partners and the federal government to complete the milestone of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project, which increased the depth of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel from 47 to 54 feet and widened it from 400 to 530 feet, ensuring that the Port of Corpus Christi will continue to advance its position as America's energy export gateway to the world.
Through his career, David Engel has demonstrated unwavering commitment to excellence, strategic leadership, and service to others. His efforts have strengthened businesses, enhanced regional development, and enriched communities across South Texas.
Mr. Speaker, Chairman David Engel embodies the highest values of leadership, dedication, and civic responsibility.
I commend him for his outstanding career and thank him for his continued commitment to our Nation.
