The Veterans' Compensation Cost‑of‑Living Adjustment Act of 2018 raises the monthly payments that veterans with service‑connected disabilities receive, as well as the benefits paid to surviving spouses and children. The increase takes effect on December 1, 2018 and is tied to the same percentage increase applied to Social Security benefits that year. It applies to disability compensation, additional dependent compensation, clothing allowances, and dependency and indemnity compensation.

Key Provisions

  • Effective Dec 1, 2018, the VA must raise all listed compensation amounts by the same percentage that Social Security benefits increase under the annual cost‑of‑living adjustment.
  • The raised amounts include wartime disability compensation, extra compensation for dependents, clothing allowances, and dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses and children.
  • The Secretary of Veterans Affairs can also make administrative adjustments for certain disabled individuals who receive compensation under a specific public law but not under the standard VA compensation chapters.
