Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act

Introduced September 15, 2025

AI-Generated Summary

Updated September 24, 2026 at 3:11 AM UTC

The Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act adds a requirement to the Social Security Act that the Social Security Administration (SSA) provide a single point of contact for anyone whose Social Security number or card has been misused or lost. The designated team will guide the victim through the entire case, coordinate with other SSA units, and keep the person informed until the issue is resolved. This change is aimed at speeding up resolutions for identity‑theft victims and improving their experience with SSA services.

Key Provisions

  • The SSA Commissioner must set up procedures to give each identity‑theft victim a single point of contact who will manage the case from start to finish.
  • The point of contact will be a team or subset of specially trained SSA employees who can coordinate with other SSA units and are accountable for the case’s resolution.
  • The team must maintain continuous records of the case and notify the victim as appropriate.
  • The new requirements become effective 180 days after the law is enacted.
